Crystal Filled GEODE

A geode forms through a fascinating natural process that takes thousands to millions of years. Here’s how it happens:

  1. Cavity Formation – A geode begins as a hollow space within a rock. This can occur in different ways:

    • Volcanic Gas Bubbles – In lava, gas bubbles create hollow pockets that later become geodes.
    • Dissolved Cavities in Sedimentary Rock – In sedimentary environments, cavities can form when water dissolves rock, such as limestone.
  2. Mineral-Rich Water Seepage – Over time, groundwater or hydrothermal fluids seep into the hollow cavity. These waters are rich in dissolved minerals such as quartz (silica), calcite, and other minerals.

  3. Crystal Growth – As the water slowly evaporates or cools, minerals begin to precipitate out of the solution, forming crystals along the inner walls of the cavity. The type of minerals and colors depend on what elements are present.

    • Quartz (including amethyst and agate) is the most common mineral in geodes.
    • Iron, manganese, and other trace elements can add beautiful colors to the crystals.
  4. Completion and Weathering – Over millions of years, geodes may become buried in layers of rock and sediment. Eventually, erosion exposes them, and they can be found in riverbeds, deserts, or rock formations.

When cracked open, geodes reveal stunning crystal formations inside! Each one is unique, making them exciting to collect and study.

A Little About The Founders

After earning his MBA from the University of Virginia (located in Charlottesville) in 1995, Lowell Carhart kickstarted his career at NCR as the Vice President of Quality’s protégé. By 1999, he and his USAF wife found themselves stationed in the Land of the Rising Sun – Yokota USAF base in Japan. Japan was dubbed this name because of the country’s optimal location that allows it to bask in the golden light of each morning’s first light (new sunrise) preceding many locations across the planet. It is an enchanting daily occurrence that graces this island nation, a testament to its distinct charm and the reverence for nature inherent in its culture.

Weekend jaunts across the Asian Mainland led Lowell to find a bounty of paleontological gems, which he soon began selling on eBay during his downtime. When NCR offered a buyout during their 2001 downsizing, he leaped at the chance to trade his corporate hat for a fedora, launching his own fossil business.

By 2003, Lowell and his wife were stationed in Germany, where he found himself peddling prehistoric wares at Europe’s most prestigious exhibitions two years later, they returned to the US, and Lowell started participating in American shows. However, he felt that the professionally run European events outshone their US counterparts.

So, in 2009, Lowell teamed up with his sister Christine to form Eons Expos, launching their flagship rock and mineral shows (and jewelry and gem shows) in Denver. The event grew year after year, becoming Denver’s largest by its fourth year in 2012. In 2020, they moved to the National Western Complex and rechristened it the Denver Show. And the rest, as they say, is geologic history!
