Introduction: A Journey Through Time in the Heart of New Jersey

For over 15 years, Dinosaurs Rock has been a cornerstone of the NJ Mineral, Fossil, Gem & Jewelry Show in Edison, NJ. This isn’t just a retail event; it is one of the largest gatherings of geology enthusiasts, professional paleontologists, and fine jewelry collectors on the East Coast.

Spanning five massive days in May 2026, the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center transforms into a prehistoric wonderland and a glittering treasury. Whether you are a serious investor looking for museum-quality mineral specimens or a family searching for an educational weekend adventure, this show offers a world-class experience that rivals the famous Tucson Gem Show.

Why Visit the NJ Mineral, Fossil, Gem & Jewelry Show?

The 2026 show features hundreds of exhibitors from across the globe, bringing the rarest finds from the depths of the earth to Edison. Unlike online shopping, this event allows you to touch, feel, and inspect every specimen under professional lighting.

  • Meteorites: Own a piece of the cosmos with space rocks and pallasites.

  • Fine Jewelry: Artisan-crafted gold and silver, featuring unique gemstones.

  • Metaphysical & Healing: Quartz crystals, singing bowls, and energy-focused stones.

Spotlight: Dinosaurs Rock – 15 Years of Excellence

At Dinosaurs Rock, our mission has always been to bring the museum to you. This year, we are elevating our presence at the NJ Mineral Show with our most expansive exhibit to date. Located conveniently next to the cafeteria, our booth is the “hub of history” for the event.

The Dinosaurs Rock Museum Exhibit

Don’t just look at pictures in a book—come face-to-face with the giants that once ruled the planet. Our booth features an incredible display of dinosaur specimens that serve as both an educational exhibit and a retail gallery.

  • Authentic Fossils: See real dinosaur bones and learn about the excavation process.

  • Museum Cast Replicas: High-quality replicas that are perfect for educators, decorators, and young collectors.

  • Educational Expertise: Our team of experts is on-site to answer questions about the Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Triassic periods.

Interactive Family Activities: Hands-On Geology

We believe that the best way to learn about the earth is to get your hands dirty. The NJ Mineral Show is famous for its interactive “Edutainment,” and Dinosaurs Rock leads the way with activities that create lifelong memories.

1. The Amazing Gem Mining Sluice (Panning for Gold & Gems)

Both adults and children line up at our famous Gem Mining Sluice. Experience the “Rush” of the 1849 gold miners as you sift through our specially formulated mining bags.

  • What you’ll find: Rubies, emeralds, sapphires, amethyst, citrine, quartz, topaz, peridot, pyrite, agates, and even Megalodon shark teeth!

  • How it works: Choose your bag size, pour it into your screen, and let the running water reveal the hidden treasures.

  • Pricing: Mining Bags range from $25 to $100. The larger the bag, the more “Mother Lode” treasures you’ll find.

2. Geode Cracking: Nature’s Hidden Surprise

There is nothing quite like being the first human eye to see the inside of a crystal-filled geode. This year, we have sourced a fresh batch of geodes from around the world.

  • Small ($10): Perfect for kids and beginners.

  • Medium ($15): Larger crystals and more complex structures.

  • Large ($20): Dramatic displays that make for beautiful home decor.

  • The Experience: We provide the tools and safety gear. You provide the muscle to crack it open!

3. Metal Detecting & UV Mineral Room

Beyond our booth, the show offers a glowing UV mineral room where rocks come to life in neon colors. You can also try your hand at metal detecting, a skill that combines technology with the thrill of the hunt.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable Shoes: The show floor is massive. You will be doing a lot of walking.

  • Cash/Cards: While most vendors (including Dinosaurs Rock) accept major credit cards, some smaller vendors may prefer cash.

The Educational Value of the NJ Mineral Show

  • Tactile Learning: Touching a 65-million-year-old dinosaur bone provides a connection to history that a screen cannot.

  • Chemical Properties: Understanding why certain minerals glow under UV light or how crystals form in geometric patterns is a live chemistry lesson.

  • Conservation: Learning about the earth’s crust and how these resources are mined encourages environmental stewardship.

Break Your Own
Crystal Filled GEODE
at the NJ Mineral Show

A geode forms through a fascinating natural process that takes thousands to millions of years. Here’s how it happens:

  1. Cavity Formation – A geode begins as a hollow space within a rock. This can occur in different ways:

    • Volcanic Gas Bubbles – In lava, gas bubbles create hollow pockets that later become geodes.
    • Dissolved Cavities in Sedimentary Rock – In sedimentary environments, cavities can form when water dissolves rock, such as limestone.
  2. Mineral-Rich Water Seepage – Over time, groundwater or hydrothermal fluids seep into the hollow cavity. These waters are rich in dissolved minerals such as quartz (silica), calcite, and other minerals.

  3. Crystal Growth – As the water slowly evaporates or cools, minerals begin to precipitate out of the solution, forming crystals along the inner walls of the cavity. The type of minerals and colors depend on what elements are present.

    • Quartz (including amethyst and agate) is the most common mineral in geodes.
    • Iron, manganese, and other trace elements can add beautiful colors to the crystals.
  4. Completion and Weathering – Over millions of years, geodes may become buried in layers of rock and sediment. Eventually, erosion exposes them, and they can be found in riverbeds, deserts, or rock formations.

When cracked open, geodes reveal stunning crystal formations inside! Each one is unique, making them exciting to collect and study.

A Little About The Founders

After earning his MBA from the University of Virginia (located in Charlottesville) in 1995, Lowell Carhart kickstarted his career at NCR as the Vice President of Quality’s protégé. By 1999, he and his USAF wife found themselves stationed in the Land of the Rising Sun – Yokota USAF base in Japan. Japan was dubbed this name because of the country’s optimal location that allows it to bask in the golden light of each morning’s first light (new sunrise) preceding many locations across the planet. It is an enchanting daily occurrence that graces this island nation, a testament to its distinct charm and the reverence for nature inherent in its culture.

Weekend jaunts across the Asian Mainland led Lowell to find a bounty of paleontological gems, which he soon began selling on eBay during his downtime. When NCR offered a buyout during their 2001 downsizing, he leaped at the chance to trade his corporate hat for a fedora, launching his own fossil business.

By 2003, Lowell and his wife were stationed in Germany, where he found himself peddling prehistoric wares at Europe’s most prestigious exhibitions two years later, they returned to the US, and Lowell started participating in American shows. However, he felt that the professionally run European events outshone their US counterparts.

So, in 2009, Lowell teamed up with his sister Christine to form Eons Expos, launching their flagship rock and mineral shows (and jewelry and gem shows) in Denver. The event grew year after year, becoming Denver’s largest by its fourth year in 2012. In 2020, they moved to the National Western Complex and rechristened it the Denver Show. And the rest, as they say, is geologic history!
